- THE CASINO
Alfred
de Lassence, Mayor of Pau in the thirties, signed
a convention with the Casinos Society of both
Cannes and Deauville for using the Winter Palace.
Transformation of the building was then undertaken
by the architect Georges Wyloo, who had previously
built the Printemps store in Paris and the Casino
in Deauville. He undertook demolishing the entire
glass-house, which was in a very bad state, replacing
it with a large rectangular hall.On the eastern
side of the building, the restauarnt was expanded
to create the Ambassadors hall and also extended
with a rotunda boasting a neo-classical facade.
Exuberance replaced rigour, straight lines became
arabesques. The two bell-towers, initially scheduled
for demolition, were maintained, and were surrounded
by a complicated roof structure.
