- THE WINTER PALACE
Henri
Faisans, the Mayor of Pau at the turn of the century,
decided to create a full range of public installations
in the Parc Beaumont at the eastern extremity
of the Boulevard des Pyrénées, a
terrace overllooking the Pyrenees mountains. These
installations were designed for games, shows and
all forms of events.
The
architect, Emile Bertrand, aleady well-known for
the Bois de Boulogne Green Houses, was selected
for this work, which gave birth to the Winter
Palace.
The
final construction was at the time, full of originality,
in the neo-roccoco style of the period and comprised
: two 35 meter high pinacles on either side of
an immense elliptical glass-house of 3000 square
meters and continuing with a long terrace overlooking
the Pyrenees mountains.
